The Roots

We are two generations rooted in one wholesome lifestyle. As a mother-daughter team, we are rooted in love, support, and trust. For years, the roots of our relationship have been challenged by a relentless eating disorder rooted in perfectionism, rigidity, and dishonesty. Our roots were brought back to life by our deep desire to give you an intimate look into our journey, from disordered thinking to recovery. On this blog you will find wholesome plant-based recipes, articles focused on balancing your lifestyle mind, body, and spirit, as well as true stories of re-discovering life's beauty. We hope to spark real conversations about eating disorders, a topic often buried but in need of unearthing. We do not make medical claims on our blog, nor do we claim to be experts on the subject of healing eating disorders. We find hope and purpose as a result of sharing our experiences.

Today's number is 85. This number has a dual meaning in my life. It is a juxtaposing phrase that represents my life's past ambitions and my life's current goals. It stands as a testimony to both progress and clear indications of mental and physical strength, all the wh...

To most, clothes are wisps of material carried on our bodies day after day with little thought. They are a pair of jeans thrown on before leaving for school, a jacket buttoned to thwart the chilling cold, or a dress zipped and ready to transition from working in the of...

For me, this time of year is reserved for reflection. Reflection of both the positive and challenging moments that have shaped the past year.

Three months ago, I woke up each morning to a view of downtown Philadelphia, watching the sunrise over the lofty skys...

Dear Emma,

It has been sixty-five days since we brought you home from the hospital to heal from an illness that has taken control of your mind and body over the last six years. I know this because of a meticulous food journal I have kept to track each day you have been...

Everyone who knows me knows that I love to cook. I see food as abundance and pleasure and bliss. I was the mother that encouraged my children to know themselves and to know their bodies. I never forced my children to clear every morsel of food from their plates. They w...

When you turn eighteen, it seems like all signs point to freedom; doors for new possibilities and self-discovery open. “Eighteen” doesn’t usually bring to mind being sponge bathed by your own mother or having to wear gel packs on your butt to prevent bed sores. Your ha...
